Getting Started With Your iPhone 4S

So you have just received your new iPhone 4S and although you are extremely happy about it, you are sitting there frowning, wondering how to set it up so that it does all of those nice things that you want it to do.

  1. After unpacking your iPhone 4S, please charged it up with the charging cable that came with it. Most mobile phones are not completely charged when you buy them, so by charging the battery before you begin setting up your iPhone, you’re playing it safe. In order to charge it, you need to insert your micro chip or telephone card.  In order to do this Apple has provided you with a small tiny tool that looks like a gem clip and has a long sharp thin pointer.  Taking that tiny instrument, insert it on the side of your mobile where you will see a small tiny hole. You do not have to apply  much pressure to it. Lightly tap the long head of this clip into your phone, and the adapter for your telephone card will pop out.   If you have accidentally thrown away the tiny gem clip because you did not know what it was, please do not panic. It happened to me when I bought my very first iPhone 3G. Go get an old fashion straight pen or needle and that will serve your purpose also.
  2. Be careful not to get fingerprints all over the front side of your telephone chip. Those things are sensitive in any phone. After you have inserted the telephone card in the adapter, put your adapter gently into the same pocket on the side of the phone that you took it out of and take the iPhone cable adapter, and plug it in to your phone and the part that goes into the electric plug into your wall or wherever your electric sockets are and charge your phone up. This charging could take three to four hours.
  3. While your battery is charging, take out your booklet and glance through it. Make sure that you have every thing. Take the time  to read the Apple Care Plan that is usually accompanied with it. Doing this will save you a lot of heartbreak and confusion in the future. Also, write down the number of the customer service desk so that you can get to it immediately.  I also recommend that you take the time and go to your computer and sign in to the iPhone forum.  You will gain a lot of confidence in the forum, because you will meet people who are just as confused as yourself.
  4. Battery charged up? Then, after unplugging your iPhone, press down on the on/off button at the head of the phone until you see the apple trademark, which is the apple with a bite out of it. Your iPhone will ask you to :

a.)   Set up your location,  in other words, which country are you in.

b.)   Choose your language

c.)   Turn on your GPS services, if you want to

d.)   Give in your password for your wireless (Wi-Fi) network; you only have to give this password in once. The iPhone has a good memory. (Smile)

e.)   You are offered three options for setting up your new phone. If you are a totally new iPhone 4S customer, then you will start by setting up an Apple ID so that you can enjoy all the privileges of being an iPhone owner.

f.)    If you have grown up with the iPhone and already have an account in the iCloud and your backup is in the iCloud, then you want to restore your iPhone with the backup in the iCloud.

g.)   If you have bought a first generation iPhone 3G or have a 3GS but have all of your information on your personal computer or your MacBook or Mac, the best method is to back up from your iTunes account backed up on your computer or if  you are a new customer with an iPhone 3G or 3GS you will still have to set up an iTunes account over your computer to update your software and download any products you may buy.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to have an iTunes account. This iTunes account is created when you set up your apple ID.  You may set up your Apple ID my using your email address and setting up your own password.  Through your iTunes account you will receive the updates for your iPhone. If you are in the iCloud and have the iPhone 4 or 4S, your updates will automatically come from the iCloud, which means no more worries for you.

For those of you who have never used iTunes before, it is not difficult. All you have to do is go to your Apple website and download iTunes on your computer. After downloading iTunes, you will be asked whether you want to install it. Say yes, and it installs itself. However, using iTunes to download music and apps that you would like to have is another process that we will look at later. First thing is insuring that your iPhone 4S is activated properly.

Siri is the hit of the iPhone 4S. When ask if you would like to activate it, say yes.  If you do not want to use the comfortableness of Siri, then say no, but I must admit that this is one of the qualities that make the iPhone 4S so special.

Finally, if you are sometimes forgetful, like I am, when you are under lots of stress, you have the possibility while activating your iPhone to set up “find my iPhone.” I don’t know how many times, I have laid my iPhone down in my car or in my office and forgotten exactly where I laid it. Find my iPhone when set up, finds your iPhone and your phone does not have to be on. It will send you a message or beep and you follow the beep. It locates your phone and  is absolutely fantastic for people on the go.

You are now ready to start using your phone.  Your iPhone 4S is activated.  If you have a iPhone 3G or 3GS you will have to connect it to your computer and let iTunes sync with your phone, so that it is own your iPhone.

Right now, you should have an activated iPhone 4 or 4S with very few apps on it. If so, that is great!  On Wednesday of next week we will look at installing  apps and the different ones that you might like to use.

Nice post patty, that should guide just about anybody through the setup process. Maybe you could write a post on how to get a 4S for free, I would dig using Siri, Ive heard its brilliant.

I have found some great deals on the iPhone 4S on the internet and will be doing an article on it tomorrow. You can get an iPhone 4S with a two year contract over the same internet shop where I bought my first generation iPad and you pay 0 Euro to get it and make a monthly payment depending upon your telephone tariff of approximately 24,95 up to the highest. The best deal is the superflat which I will write about tomorrow. Shalom.
